Cornwall South Coast Winter Surf Lessons

Cold Water surfing

Why do we do it?

Because were crazy is the short answer!

We see it as an escape from the ordinary, challenging the common perspective that the winter months are to be spent dormant and in hibernation. Instead we embrace the frigid, icy water and redefine what it means to be truly connected to nature.

are the waves better?

The winter season in Cornwall often produces more consistent swell compared to the summer months. The Atlantic ocean is more active producing stronger low pressure weather systems which in turn generates more cosistent and larger swells for us to surf.

Is it not freezing?

Well it does sound crazy but with the right gear it’s completely manageable and actually rather pleasant. A good quality and correct thickness of wetsuit will make a huge difference. Generally a 5/4mm wetsuit is enough for Cornish winters, don’t forget your boots, gloves and hood! An old trick is to fill a flask with warm water, perfect to help defrost at the end of your session.

health benefits?

Winter surfing isn’t just for the hardcore, it’s a secret weapon for your body and mind! The cold water gives your immune system a boost, cranking up circulation and reducing inflammation like a natural ice bath. Paddling through icy waves fires up your endurance, keeping you fit and strong. Plus, the thrill of riding winter waves floods your brain with feel-good endorphins, blasting away stress and winter blues. And you’ll beat the summer crowds, which means more waves for you to catch.
